There is no need to add a dash (or a hyphen) to the colon.
A colon can be used to introduce words which offer more detail of something mentioned earlier in the sentence.
Karl bought the greyhounds for only one purpose: making money.
one purpose = making money
Karl bought the greyhounds to make money: he lost over 3000 pounds in all.
Where a slight break is preferable to new sentence, a semicolon should be used.
Quotations of more than 6 words should be introduced by a colon, as opposed to a comma. (This is not a hard and fast rule.)
The witch shrieked: "Go to Carson and sniff out the remaining children."
Nine-word quotation - colon
The witch shrieked: "Sniff out the remaining children."
Five-word quotation - a comma would be better
Be consistent with formatting when using bullets, and do not use semicolons for introductions.
Example 1
Not consistent with capital letters in the bullets
Example 2
Uses a semicolon to introduce the bullets and is not consistent with capital letters in the bullets
Example 3
Consistent with capital letters in the bullets
