Welcome to grammar-monster.com.   In business, you are what you write.  Every day, people judge you by your writing.  Whether it's right or wrong, they make assumptions about your intelligence, education and capabilities based on the standard of your correspondence.  The English grammar lessons, tests and chat forum on this site are all free.  If you like the site, you can download the desktop version, designed for off-line use, for just $19.95.

Punctuation Lessons

Apostrophes   Apostrophes cause more errors than any other punctuation mark.    Here is a great lesson on how to use apostrophes.
Brackets Brackets look so unwieldy in official correspondence. This lesson on parenthesis explains when commas or dashes might be better options.
Colons    These are colons : : : : : : : : :  Used correctly, they can make your writing succinct and effective.  Don't use them wrongly though. See the lesson on colons.
Commas    After the apostrophe, the comma is the biggest villain. It has lots of uses.  They're explained well in the lesson on commas.
Dashes     Dashes are a bit longer than hyphens when hand written.  They are great for extending sentences or replacing brackets.
Hyphens    They have other uses, but hyphens are mainly used to join words together; e.g. three-bedroom house, free-range eggs.  The lesson on hyphens is a cracker.
Quotation Marks    When do you use 'single' quotation marks, and when do you use "doubles"?  The use of quotation marks is explained in this fun lesson.
Semicolons    These are semicolons  ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ;  When used correctly and sparingly, they look tremendous.  See the lessons on extending a sentence and semicolons.

The Eight Parts of Speech

Adverbs    Yup, it's a drag, but you have to learn the 8 parts of speech to progress to status of "Grammarian". Most adverbs end "ly"; e.g. quietly. Try the adverbs lesson.
Adjectives    Adjectives describe things.  Big elephant.  Big is an adjective.  You excited yet?  Try the lesson on adjectives.  It's quite palatable.
Conjunctions    And, or and but are the most common conjunctions. The big question is whether to put a comma before one or not.  See the lesson on conjunctions.
Interjections    Phew is an interjection.  Read more about interjections.
Prepositions    In, on, about, over, under, near, by and with are all prepositions.  There are dozens of others.  Find out more with the lesson on prepositions.
Pronouns    She is a pronoun.  So is he.  Jeepers, who else is a pronoun?  Find out by reading the lesson on pronouns.
Nouns    As you can't use proper nouns in Scrabble, you'd better find out what they are.  Read the lesson on nouns and capital letters.
Verbs    Verbs are doing words. They are the most important part of speech, because you can't form a sentence without one.  See the lesson on verbs.
