Is Grammar Monster suitable for students learning English as a second language? |

Grammar Monster is designed for people who write English well.
It is not cluttered with basic grammar points which a native English speaker would already know.
For example, Grammar Monster explains how to use semicolons, but it does not show the conjugation of verbs (I am, you are, he/she/it is, we are, etc.)
Grammar Monster answers the grammar questions that plague managers and university students.
Grammar Monster contains thousands of real-life examples and includes a glossary of frequently asked questions and common errors. It has confirmatory tests (if you like that sort of thing) and a comprehensive list of grammatical terms (for those who really want to get their teeth into the grammar).It’s about this sort of stuff:
Do you put a comma before and? What’s the difference between if and whether? How do you use semicolons? When are you actually supposed to use commas? Does winter have a capital W? Does north have a capital N? Effecting or Affecting? Does my comma go inside or outside the speech marks? Double or single speech marks? What’s the difference between a hyphen and a dash? Does Grammar Monster cover English and American English? |

Yes. There are some differences between American English and British English. For example:
- In the UK, you have to differentiate between licence and license, practice and practise, and dependant and dependent.
- There are different rules about where to place punctuation at the end of a quotation.
- There are different conventions on the use of single and double quotation marks.
- The are different expectations with hyphens in compound adjectives.
- There are different rules for using commas before conjunctions (words like and) in lists.
The differences are highlighted and explained in Grammar Monster. The lessons are suitable for all visitors. |
